Sak Be' | The White Path
In ancient Mavan culture. "Sak Be'" referred to the sacred roads connecting cities - but also to the Milky Way, seen as the luminous path leading souls to the spirit world. This painting draws on that dual symbolism: a cosmic and spiritual journey, a bridge between the earthly and the divine.
The distinctive white and warm orange hues in this piece come from the Atlantic Bittersweet Shell (Glycymeris decussata), which serves as the central element of the composition.
Belonging to an ancient family of bivalves that first appeared over 140 million years ago, this shell carries within it a deep geological memory - a remnant of Earth's primordial seas. Ethically collected from Playacar Beach in Playa del Carmen, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico, it embodies both natural beauty and ancestral presence.
Just as Sak Be in ancient Mayan belief symbolized both the sacred roads of the earth and the celestial path of souls, the shell becomes more than a material — it becomes a vessel of time, guiding us through the invisible bridge between the earthly and the divine. In this artwork, nature and myth intertwine: the spiral of the shell echoes the spiral of the Milky Way, inviting the viewer into a journey inward
